Issue
3: July 2010 |
|
Dear
Reader
Welcome
to our third ITPS enewsletter. In this
issue we review our latest Breakfast Briefing on Unified
Communications. We also consider the hype in Cloud Computing
and how
by carefully optimising your WAN you can get the most out of
virtualisation, your bandwidth, servers and deliver better
service to your branch network. Lastly,
we look at the £125k savings our team helped Hay and Kilner
realise by virtualising their IT environment
We
hope you find the articles of interest and welcome any
comments

Information
on the ITPS Breakfast Briefing at NUFC
|
|
|
|
On
Wed 9 June 2010 an invited audience at Newcastle United had a hands on
demonstration of how UC can integrate email, voice mail, unified
messaging, instant messaging, and web conferencing to deliver superior
customer service and reduce call costs
Rob Wiles, who has
been working with UC from its infancy over 15 years ago, untangled the
Unified Communications spin from the reality explaining the top
business benefits. Having worked with several global UC providers including
Siemens and Avaya he made clear his views on what UC can and does
deliver. Download Rob's presention
This was followed by Ed Wright (part of the crack
US Shoretel UC product development team who have propelled Shoretel
into the number 1 US UC supplier) who gave a live on demo of what UC
can do for your organisation. The audience were able to see UC in
action and put some tough questions to the expert.
And
finally, it finished with two short films of customer comments and
opinions on how unified communications has impacted their
organisation’s business performance.
We finished slightly
after the allotted time but this was because the audience had so many
questions on this exciting technology. Feedback was great (overall 4.5
out of a possible 5) so thank you to all that attended and made it such
an excellent event. If you would like a demo of UC then call

Clearing
the Clouds |
Matt Prigge
from InfoWorld takes a sceptical view of the Cloud
|
|
|
|
Matt
takes an
interesting stance on Cloud Computing that contrasts
with the
current hype surrounding the Cloud. He feels strongly that the cloud
has had more attention than it actually deserves. The example he uses
is that web hosting providers have been around since the dawn
of
the Internet. ITPS have been providing this service for customers for
ten years. He considers them the first widely adopted
purveyors
of cloud infrastructure charging on a subscription or per-use basis
like a utility. Whilst recognising that the advances in server
virtualisation and the development of multitenant virtualisation
platforms now enables cloud infrastructure providers to support just
about any kind of compute requirement his view is that
at a very basic level, cloud infrastructure isn't new at all. It's the
marketing and spin that's new. The ITPS view on Cloud is that it is
just one of many options open to
ITPS customers. When making recommendations we look at a mix
of
solutions where clients use cloud as some part of service delivery -
for example it is very powerful when used as part of DR. So if you want
to benefit from ten years
experience in Cloud Computing contact ITPS and find out where your
business can benefit from good old Cloud Computing. To read the full

of a Cloud Sceptic

Optimisation attend our Technology Workshop |
|
|
|
Virtualisation is often a key cost-savings
strategy, but one critical area is often overlooked. If you’re
consolidating servers out of a branch office and virtualising them into
the data centre, end-user performance problems could kill your project.
WAN optimisation enables LAN-like performance over the WAN, allowing
branch users to still have the required application performance. WAN
optimisation frees businesses from common IT constraints by increasing
application performance and enabling consolidation whilst eliminating
the need to increase bandwidth, storage or servers.
The workshop is on Thurs 12 Aug from 8.30 to 10.30 at NUFC

Hay
and Kilner Virtualise |
| Virtualisation
reduces IT costs by £125,000 |
|
|
Leading North East law firm Hay & Kilner is set to shave
£125,000 from its IT infrastructure costs over the next five years and
further its ‘green’ ambitions, after calling in technology experts ITPS
to help it adopt the latest eco-friendly technology.
Gateshead-based ITPS, which won the contract against national
competitors, has worked alongside the law firm’s in-house team to
review and strengthen its IT infrastructure. Its experts used
virtualisation technology to cut the number of servers from 16 to
three, while boosting the overall efficiency and resilience of the IT
platform.
The result will see Hay & Kilner save on the cost of new
hardware and software, and benefit from lowered maintenance and support
bills. It will also slash its carbon footprint through
reduced energy and cooling requirements. ITPS is delighted our
virtualisation expertise was recognised and this is one
of many clients we have recently helped in
this area.

“ITPS
presented a clear case for virtualisation as the best way to meet our
aims for greater efficiency, higher resilience and lower costs..”

|
“Virtualisation
works by pooling the capacity needs and condensing that requirement
into a smaller number of more powerful servers. It then constantly
monitors and adjusts demand, directing resources where they are needed.”
